The Impact of Hinduism and Buddhism to Indonesia

Hello readers.. It's been a while since I posted an article that I wrote for my assignment. It's obviously not easy because I must not only find and write down some points on my article, but I also have to provide evidence from trusted sources to support that points. Moreover, the usage of  academic words that make this thing become more complicated.. (hahaha). Well readers, at this moment I'm going to share you about my writing that talks about the influence of Hinduism and Buddhism toward Indonesian culture. I thought that this topic is really interesting to discuss knowing that Indonesia is one of multicultural countries with many different people, ethnics, and beliefs. Hinduism and Buddhism are beliefs that originally come from India. They came to Indonesia in the 6^th century through Indian traders.  Acculturation process had happened in the past when local culture of Indonesia met and adopted elements of Indian culture. Here are some impacts of Hinduism and Buddhism to Indonesian culture and society.

            First, Indonesian people start dividing people into several classes. Before Hinduism and Buddhism came to Indonesia, people lived without seeing their social status. They got in touch one another freely. Yet, Hinduism and Buddhism came to Indonesia and divided Indonesian people into several social classes where the king was in the highest class and the farmer in the lowest class.

            Second, building in Indonesia has more Indian architecture. At first, Indonesian people built their home from bamboo and woods without any special ornaments. Since Hinduism and Buddhism spread in Indonesia, they built their home and another buildings from rock and added some Indian elements inside such as making statues, images and sculptures.

            Third, Indonesian people start adopting Indian handwriting. Before Hinduism and Buddhism came to Indonesia, the people had never had handwriting system. They only communicated using oral words. After that, they tried to adopt language from country where those two religions came from. For instance, hanacaraka in Java has similar shape and character with tamil in India.

            The coming of Hinduism and Buddhism to Indonesia gave some impacts to Indonesia whether in social classification, building, and handwriting system. Yet, those impacts make Indonesian culture richer. Therefore, it is our responsibility to preserve these cultures.
