Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to express his
willingness to boost regional economic integration at the Asia-Pacific
Economic Cooperation forum.
The 2-day summit meeting of 21 APEC countries and territories begins in Beijing on Monday.
Separately, diplomatic sources say negotiations are underway between Japan and China to arrange Abe's first meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC summit.
Abe is scheduled to meet members of the APEC Business Advisory Council on Monday afternoon.
He will then dine with other leaders, hosted by Chinese President Xi.
During the summit, the leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen regional economic integration.
Sources say Abe will express his willingness to support a framework called the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific.
Abe may meet Xi as early as Monday. If the plan is realized it would be the first summit meeting between Japan and China since May 2012.
Sources say Abe is hoping the meeting can help improve the tense relations between the 2 nations.
