Animation master Miyazaki receives honorary Oscar

Japan
Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki has received an honorary Oscar for his lifetime achievements in film.

The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences handed the award to Miyazaki and 2 other recipients in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Miyazaki said before the ceremony that he hadn't heard of the honorary Oscar until he won it. He also said it would be a bit foolish if he celebrates without reserve but he would seem awful if he doesn't, so he is pretending to be feeling somewhere in between.

Miyazaki said in a speech at the ceremony that he was fortunate to be able to work in the last 50 years of traditional animation making with paper, pencil and film.

He is the second Japanese to win an honorary Oscar after the late film director Akira Kurosawa.

Miyazaki won an Oscar for the Best Animated Featured Film in 2003 for "Spirited Away". His latest film, "The Wind Rises", was nominated for the award this year.
